The Newnan-Coweta Art Association has selected Michael Sawecki as its featured “Artist of the Month” for November, and for good reason. With over two decades of experience, Sawecki is a well-established figure in the Georgia arts community. His stunning artworks are currently on display in the entryway to Newnan City Hall until December, allowing locals and visitors alike to admire his unique style up close. From his early days as a budding artist to his current success, Michael Sawecki’s journey has been remarkable. Through dedication, hard work, and immense talent, he has become a true force to be reckoned with in art.
Michael Sawecki is a Michigan native who moved south after completing his BFA from The College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He resides in Hampton and has garnered almost 20 years of teaching expertise. He taught at the Fulton County School System for many years before moving to Henry County, where he currently represents Locust Grove High School.
While Sawecki is a full-time teacher, his passion for art is equally vital. Through the years, he has refined his art and exhibited work in numerous Georgia venues, such as the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State, the Marietta Museum of Art, and the Lagrange Art Museum. He derives inspiration from notable personalities like Francis Bacon and Edward Hopper, the musician Nick Cave, writer Thomas Ligotti, and filmmaker David Cronenberg.
Michael Sawecki has received numerous awards and accolades for his surrealist paintings, primarily utilizing acrylic on canvas. The paintings showcase his remarkable ability to experiment with contrasting colors and textures. He creates a dreamy world through his art, often taking inspiration from mundane objects such as shoes and rocks. In his words, “I often take ordinary objects and imbue them with a sense of wonder, then, through surrealism, strive to convey a story, a message, or simply display how excruciatingly rich in symbolism our world can be.”
Apart from his paintings, Michael Sawecki is also a skilled photographer. He often captures the decaying beauty of abandoned sites, staring into forgotten fragments of time. His photography pieces are a reflection of his passion for the supernatural, the surreal, and the wondrous. Throughout his works, we can see the subtle intertwining of the mortal and the immortal, the earthly and otherworldly.
Michael Sawecki’s artworks bring a unique perspective to the Georgia arts community. His passion for surrealism creates a vision beyond the ordinary, blending it with an insider’s perspective of the human psyche. As we delve into his art through the display at Newnan City Hall, we can witness his remarkable capture of textures, his eye for the supernatural, and his quest for wonder. Being titled the Featured Artist of the Month for November is a well-deserved recognition for his accomplishments and passion for his craft. Michael Sawecki’s art deserves our attention, and we encourage everyone to visit his exhibit and experience the world he creates for us.
