Subheading: Preservation of Museum Buildings, Properties and Collections
The Senoia Area Historical Society upholds a proud mission to secure, preserve and promote the social and cultural history of the community. Through educational programs, preservation of museum buildings, properties and collections, acquisition and reserve of items of significant relevance, research and publication of historic records, identification and encouragement of preservation of important places and structures throughout the community, and collaboration with public, private and other non-profit organizations, the Society strives to achieve its mission in an open, ethical and professional manner.
The Formation of the Senoia Area Historical Society
The Senoia Area Historical Society traces its origins to the momentous year of 1976, when a group of spirited townspeople banded together to plan festivities to mark the nation’s Bicentennial. After the successful celebrations, the remaining $55.89 in the budget was set aside and used as seed money to found the Society in 1977. In 1980, this hardworking organisation officially incorporated and then went on to purchase the historic Carmichael home at 6 Couch Street in 1990. After numerous years of dedicated effort, the Society opened the doors to its history museum in 2010. Most notably, these pioneers were also instrumental in achieving National Register of Historic Places status for the Senoia Historic District in 1989.

The History Museum: A Testament to the McKnight Family
The History Museum, located in the Historic District of Senoia inside the house at 6 Couch Street, is a proud testament to the McKnight family’s iconic Gothic Revival style built back in the 1870s. On July 18, 2010 – a beautiful sunny day – the museum opened its doors to the community, fulfilling the dreams of its charter members from the 1970s. Since then, it has served as a beacon to locals and visitors alike, offering friendly member volunteers who are eager to share their knowledge about the area’s unique history every Friday and Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00.
In sum, the Senoia Area Historical Society plays an invaluable role in protecting and promoting the history, culture, and heritage of Senoia and the surrounding communities. Offering landmark preservation, educational programs, meetings, events, and constructive fundraising activities, the Society continues to be a uniting influence in stimulating collaborative civic pride for all generations. With accessible membership to anyone regardless of where they live, the Society welcomes everyone to become involved and take part in the pursuit of preserving anecdotal family and regional stories for generations to come.
